A liver transplant has a number of separate and distinct stages:Bridging-to-therapy - a support therapy is usually given by physicians before liver transplantationHepatectomy – the removal of the liverAnhepatic phase – no liver Implantation of the liverPostimplantation phase – recovery after the transplant
The liver transplant operation normally lasts between five and six hours but this will vary from patient to patient.
Some recent advances in liver transplantation techniques have led to the introduction of new methods, for example reduced size liver transplantation - in which a small part of an adult liver is placed in an infant or small child’s body – and split liver transplantation, in which the liver of one donor is divided into two portions and implanted into the bodies of two different patients.
One of the main challenges is that there are not as many donors and there are people who require a new liver.
This has led to increased research into the area of live donor transplantation.
