The most common reason for liver transplantations in adults is an acute or chronic liver disease that leads to irreversible liver failure or cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can be caused by alcohol or by the hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses.
However these are a number of other conditions which may require liver transplants:Autoimmune liver diseases – where the body’s immune system attacks the liverConsiderable accumulation of fat in the liver also known as Fatty LiverHereditary liver diseases (such as Wilson Disease and Hemochromatosis)Liver cancerBenign liver tumorsBiliary atresia, a condition of the bile duct. At present this the main reason for liver transplants in people under eighteen.Primary biliary cirrhosis, an autoimmune disease which is characterized by the slow destruction of the small bile ducts Primary sclerosing cholangitis – inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts
The next stage of the process to decide if a liver transplant is feasible are routine x-rays and blood tests. All the other organs and systems are also checked, including heart, kidney, lungs, brain and immune system to ensure the maximum possibility of a successful outcome.
