Sometimes, if a donor is available, a patient may decide to have a kidney transplant before it becomes vital. After the transplant, patients will no longer need dialysis. However, some specific factors and conditions may prevent kidney transplantation.

The most common exclusion criteria are:Certain infections like tuberculosis or osteomyelitisHeart diseasesLiver diseasesLung diseasesOther life-threatening diseases, such as cancerAlcohol abuseDrugs abuseMental illnessesIntolerance or allergies towards the medications needed after the transplantation

The waiting lists for kidney transplantation can be long and requirements vary from one country to another. The main criteria takes into account the age and the general condition of the patient.
